    Since the gray doves sang among the branches

    of a bān tree, I have been passionately in love with Albān's daughter.

    So if you see a bān tree swaying, lush and moist,

    and tender, the bān tree's sway reminds me of her.

    The bān tree's sway destroyed my patience and built

    my sorrow—God be praised for this destroyer and builder!

    My heart belongs to ʿUmrān; I yearn for no other beauty,

    unless I have two hearts at once.

    لاَ غَروَ ِإن هَيَّجَ الأشجَانَ قُلبَانِ

    Two bracelets on her wrists stirred my sorrow;

    no wonder if two bracelets stir up sorrows.
