أَلاAh! هَلhas ...? أَتىreached عَنّاabout us سُعادَSuʿād وَدونَهاand between us and her
مَهامِهُtrackless wastes بيدٍbarren deserts تَعتَليprevail بالصَعالِكِover the outlaws
Ah, has news of us reached Suʿād—though between us lie
Trackless, barren wastes that overpower outlaws—
بِأَنّاthat we صَبَحناwe brought at dawn القَومَthe people فيin حُرَّthe heart of دارِهِمtheir home
حِمامَthe doom of المَناياdeath بِالسُيوفِwith the swords البَواتِكِthe keen-cutting
That we brought the people, at dawn in the heart of their home,
The doom of death, with keen-cutting swords?
قَتَلناwe slew بعَمروin requital for ʿAmr مِنهُمُamong them خَيرَthe finest فارِسٍhorseman
يَزيدَYazīd وَسَعداًand Saʿd وَاِبنَand the son of عَوفٍʿAwf بِمالِكِin requital for Mālik
For ʿAmr we slew their finest horseman—
Yazīd—and Saʿd; and Ibn ʿAwf for Mālik.
ظَلَلناwe kept on نُفَرّيwe cleave بِالسُيوفِwith the swords رُؤوسَهُمtheir heads
وَنَرشُقُهُمand we pelt them بِالنَبلِwith arrows بَينَamong الدَكادِكِthe low sandhills
We kept cleaving their heads with swords,
And pelting them with arrows among the low sandhills.
