وَمُستَبسِلٍand many a fearless warrior ضافيlong and ample القَميصِthe shirt of mail ضَمَمتُهُI embraced him
بِأَزرَقَwith a steel-blue arrow لاnot نِكسٍan arrow reversed after its nock broke وَلاand not مُتَعَوَجِcrooked
And many a fearless warrior in ample mail have I embraced
A youth in loose shirt I embraced
with a steel-blue arrow, neither reworked nor crooked.
Of sky-blue, unwrinkled and straight
عَليهِon it نَسارِيٌّeagle-feather fletching عَلىon خوطِa slender shoot نَبعَةٍa nabʿ tree
وَفوقٍand a nock كَعُرقوبِlike the hock of القَطاةِthe sandgrouse مُدَحرَجِrounded
It bears eagle-feather fletching on a slender shaft of nabʿ wood,
Over it a trim robe that glides
and a rounded nock like a sandgrouse’s hock.
Like the gait of a swaying date
وَقارَبتُand I brought close مِنfrom كَفَّيَّmy two hands ثُمَّthen نَزَعتُهاI drew it back
بِنَزعٍwith a draw إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle اِستُكرِهَwas strained النَزعُthe draw مُحلِجِforceful
And I brought my hands together, then drew the bow back,
I reached out to clasp his hands
with a forceful pull, when the draw was strained.
Though the clasp, if disliked, would grate
فَصاحَتso it cried out بِكَفَّيَّin my two hands صَيحَةًa cry ثُمَّthen راجَعَتit returned to
أَنينَthe groaning of المَريضِthe sick man ذيhaving الجِراحِwounds المُشَجَّجِgashed about the head
So it gave a cry in my hands, then returned to
Then his hands cried out and pulled away
the groaning of a sick man, wounded and gashed about the head.
Like one hurt, his deep wound aggravated
