ماذاwhat يخبِّرُwill tell ضيفُthe guest بيتكَyour house أهلهُhis family
إنif سيلَis asked كيفَhow معادهُhis return ومعاجهand his stay
What will the guest of your house tell his family
What does your guest tell his family
if asked how his return and his stay went?
Of how the torrent's flow and surge were?
أيقولُwill he say?: جاوزتُI crossed الفراتَthe Euphrates ولمand did not أنلI obtain
ريَّاًquenching of thirst لديهِbeside it وقدand indeed طغتoverflowed أمواجهُits waves
Will he say, “I crossed the Euphrates, yet did not find
Does he say: I crossed the Euphrates but found
my thirst quenched beside it, though its waves overflowed;
No water with it, though its waves were raging,
وَرِقِيتُand I climbed فيin دَرَجِthe steps الْعلاَeminence فَتَضَايَقَتْthen grew narrow
عمَّاfor what أريدُI seek شعابهُits ravines وفجاجهand its passes
and I climbed the steps of eminence, but too narrow were
And I climbed up the stairs of loftiness, but
its ravines and passes for what I sought”?
Its cliffs and crevices were too narrow for what I wanted,
ولتخبرنَّand will surely tell خصاصتيmy poverty بتملُّقيthrough my flattery
والماءand water يخبرُreveals عنabout قذاهُits impurities زجاجةُa glass
And my poverty will surely speak through my flattery;
Yet let my qualities inform you of my flattery,
and a glass reveals the impurities in water.
And the water tells of its container's glass.
عنْدِيI possess يَوَاقِيتُrubies الْقَرِيضِverse وَدُرُّهُand its pearls
وَعَلَيّand upon me إكْلِيلُthe wreath الْكَلاَمspeech وَتَاجُهُand its crown
I possess the rubies of verse and its pearls,
With me are the gems of poetry and its pearls,
and I wear the wreath of speech and its crown.
And on me is the crown of speech and its crown.
تربيsurpass علىabove روضِthe meadows الرُّباthe hills أزهارهُits blossoms
وَيَرُفُّand flutters فيin نَادِيthe assembly النَّدىgenerosity دِيبَاجُهُits brocade
Its blossoms surpass the meadows of the hills,
Flowers nurtured in the meadow of calm grow on me,
and its brocade flutters in generosity’s assembly.
And its brocade flutters in the club of dew.
وَالشَّاعِرُand the poet المِنْطِيقُeloquent أسْوَدُa black serpent سالخٌskin-shedding
وَالشعْرُand poetry مِنْهُfrom him لُعَابُهُhis saliva وَمُجَاجُهُand his spittle
And the eloquent poet is a black, skin-shedding serpent;
The excellent poet is a flayed black man,
and his poetry is his saliva and his spittle.
And from him comes its spittle and mucus.
وَعَدَاوَةُand the enmity الشّعَرَاءِof poets دَاءٌa disease مُعْضِلٌintractable
وَلَقَدْand indeed يَهُونُis easy عَلَىfor الْكَرِيمِthe generous person عِلاَجُهُits treatment
And poets’ enmity is an intractable disease,
The enmity of poets is an intransigent disease,
and its treatment is indeed easy for the generous.
Yet overcoming it is easy for the generous man.
