فَإِذاso if سَمِعتَyou hear بِأَنَّthat مَجدوداًa fortunate man حَوىheld
عُوداًa stick فَأَثمَرَthen it bore fruit فيin يَدَيهِhis two hands فَصَدِّقِthen believe it
So if you hear that a fortunate man held
When you hear that a rejected man embraced a piece of wood, and it bore fruit in his hands, believe it!
A stick, and it bore fruit in his hands, believe it.
And when you hear that a deprived man came upon water to drink, and drowned in it, verify it!
وَإِذاand if سَمِعتَyou hear بِأَنَّthat مَحروماًan unlucky man أَتىcame to
ماءًwater لِيَشرَبَهُto drink it فَغاصَthen it sank away فَحَقِّقِthen be certain of it
And if you hear that an unlucky man came to
If wealth could be obtained through ruses, you would find me clinging to the stars of the horizons.
Water to drink, and it sank away, be certain of it.
But the one destined for poverty is denied wealth - two opposites, how can they converge?
لَوif كانَwere بِالحِيَلِthrough stratagems الغِنىwealth لَوَجَدتَنيyou would surely find me
بِنُجومِto the stars أَقطارِthe reaches of السَماءِthe sky تَعَلُّقيmy clinging
If wealth came through stratagems, you would find me
The most deserving of worry among God's creations is a man of ambition worn down by meager sustenance.
Clinging to the stars in the reaches of the sky.
And the misery of the wise and the pleasant life of the fool are proof of God's decree and wisdom.
لَكِنَّbut مَنwhoever رُزِقَwas granted الحِجاintellect حُرِمَwas denied الغِنىwealth
ضِدّانِtwo opposites مُفتَرِقانِseparated أَيَّutter تَفَرُّقِseparation
But whoever is granted intellect is denied wealth—
Indeed, the one granted affluence who earns no reward or praise is not successful.
Two opposites, utterly apart.
Perseverance brings closer every distant matter, and perseverance opens every closed door.
وَأَحَقُّand most deserving خَلقِcreatures of اللَهِGod بِالهَمِّof worry اِمرُؤٌa man
ذوpossessing هِمَّةٍhigh ambition يُبلىis afflicted بِرِزقٍwith a livelihood ضَيِّقِmeager
And among God's creatures, the one with most cause for worry is a man
Of high ambition, afflicted with a meager livelihood.
وَمِنَand among الدَليلِthe evidence عَلىfor القَضاءِfate وَحُكمِهِand its rule
بُؤسُmisery اللَبيبِthe wise man وَطيبُand the pleasantness of عَيشِlife الأَحمَقِthe fool
And among the proofs of fate and its rule
Are the wise man's misery and the fool's pleasant life.
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthe one who رُزِقَwas granted اليَسارَwealth فَلَمbut did not يَنَلattain
أَجراًa reward وَلاnor حَمداًpraise لِغَيرُsurely not مُوَفَّقِblessed with success
Indeed, one who is granted wealth but earns
Neither reward nor praise is surely not blessed with success.
وَالجَدُّand good fortune يُدنيbrings near كُلَّevery أَمرٍthing شاسِعٍdistant
وَالجَدُّand good fortune يَفتَحُopens كُلَّevery بابٍdoor مُغلَقِclosed
And good fortune brings every distant thing near,
And good fortune opens every closed door.
