عفا الله عن عبدِ أعانَ بدعوةٍ
خليلينtwo close friends كاناthey both were دائمينsteadfast علىin الودِّaffection
خليلين كانا دائمين على الودِّ
May God pardon a servant who helped with a prayer
May God forgive a servant who helped with a prayer
Two close friends who had been steadfast in affection,
Two friends who were always affectionate
إلىuntil أنthat مشىwent واشيa tale-bearer الهوىlove بنميمةٍwith malicious gossip
إلى أن مشى واشي الهوى بنميمةٍ
إلىto ذَاكَthat one مِنْfrom هذَاthis one فَزَالاَand so they both departed عَنِfrom الْعَهْدِthe pledge
إلى ذَاكَ مِنْ هذَا فَزَالاَ عَنِ الْعَهْدِ
Until love’s tale-bearer went with malicious gossip
Until the tales of a slanderer made mischief
To that one from this one, and both forsook their pledge.
Between this one and that, so they broke their pact
