Let the days do whatever they wish.
And be content in spirit when fate decrees.

فَماfor there is no لِحَوادِثِfor the calamities of الدُنياthis world بَقاءُpermanence
فَما لِحَوادِثِ الدُنيا بَقاءُ
And do not be distraught at a calamity the nights bring,
For the calamities of this world do not last.

And be a man, steadfast in the face of terrors,
And let generosity and loyalty be your nature.

فَماfor there is no فيin النارِthe fire لِلظَمآنِfor the thirsty person ماءُwater
فَما في النارِ لِلظَمآنِ ماءُ
And do not hope for generosity from a miser,
For there is no water in fire for the thirsty.

Nor does toil increase your sustenance.

Nor misery that befalls you, nor prosperity.

And God's earth is vast, yet
When fate descends, the open expanse grows narrow.

Let the days be treacherous at every turn,
For medicine is of no avail against death.
