إِذاif رُمتَyou wish أَنto تَحياlive سَليماًsafe مِنَfrom الرَدىruin
وَدينُكَand your faith مَوفورٌintact وَعِرضُكَand your honor صَيِّنُprotected
If you wish to live safe from ruin,
If you wish to live serene and healthy, far from vice
With your faith intact and your honor protected,
With faith secure and reputation without flaw,
فَلاthen let not يَنطِقَنever speak مِنكَfrom you اللِسانُthe tongue بِسَوأَةٍof a fault
فَكُلُّكَfor your whole self سَوءاتٌfaults وَلِلناسِand people have أَلسُنُtongues
Then never let your tongue speak of a fault,
Then let no word escape your tongue to cause offence
For you are full of faults, and others have tongues.
For all is blemish, and men's tongues will talk their fill
وَعَيناكَand your two eyes إِنif أَبدَتreveal إِلَيكَto you مَعائِباًfaults
فَدَعهاthen leave them be وَقُلand say ياO عَينُeye لِلناسِpeople have أَعيُنُeyes
And if your eyes reveal faults to you,
Your eyes reveal defects; ignore what they present
Then leave them be and say, “O eye, others have eyes.”
And say "My eyes, all men have eyes, and so do I"
وَعاشِرand associate with others بِمَعروفٍwith kindness وَسامِحand forgive مَنِwhoever اِعتَدىhas transgressed
وَدافِعand repel وَلَكِنand yet بِالَّتيin the way that هِيَit is أَحسَنُbest
And treat others kindly, and forgive whoever does wrong;
Show grace in conduct, and forgiveness to transgressors,
And repel harm, but in the way that is best.
Defend yourself, but in the best and noblest way
