المَرءُa person إِنif كانَis عاقِلاًwise وَرِعاًpious
المَرءُ إِن كانَ عاقِلاً وَرِعاً
أَشغَلَهُkeeps him occupied عَنaway from عُيوبِfaults of غَيرِهِothers besides himself وَرَعُهhis piety
أَشغَلَهُ عَن عُيوبِ غَيرِهِ وَرَعُه
If a person is wise and pious,
If a man has wisdom and piety
his piety keeps him from dwelling on others' faults,
His piety distracts him from others' faults
كَماjust as العَليلُthe ailing person السَقيمُsick أَشغَلَهُkeeps him occupied
كَما العَليلُ السَقيمُ أَشغَلَهُ
عَنaway from وَجَعِpain of الناسِthe people كُلِّهِمall of them وَجَعُهhis pain
عَن وَجَعِ الناسِ كُلِّهِم وَجَعُه
just as an ailing, sick man is distracted
Just as a sick man's illness distracts him
from the pain of all people by his own pain.
From all people's pains, his own pain distracts him
