عَلَيَّupon me ثِيابٌgarments لَوif تُباعُthey were sold جَميعُهاall of them

I wear garments that, if all were sold,
For a fals, the fals would be worth more than they.
فيهِنَّwithin them نَفسٌa soul لَوif تُقاسُwere measured بِبَعضِهاagainst part of it

Within them is a soul which, if the souls of mortals
Were weighed against even part of it, would prove nobler and greater.

The wearing-out of its sheath does not harm the sword’s blade,
If it is keen-edged: wherever you direct it, it cleaves.
