قَنَعتُI was content بِالقوتِwith sustenance مِنfrom زَمانيmy days
وَصُنتُand I guarded نَفسيmyself عَنِfrom الهَوانِhumiliation
I have been content with the sustenance my days provide,
I have been satisfied with mere livelihood for some time
And have guarded myself from humiliation,
And have guarded myself against disgrace
خَوفاًfor fear مِنَof الناسِpeople أَنthat يَقولواthey might say
فَضلُfavor فُلانٍso-and-so عَلىupon فُلانِso-and-so
For fear that people might say,
Fearing people would say:
"So-and-so has bestowed a favor on so-and-so."
"So-and-so is superior to so-and-so"
مَنwhoever كُنتُI was عَنof مالِهِhis wealth غَنِيّاًindependent
فَلاso not أُباليI care إِذاif جَفانيhe shunned me
Whoever's wealth I have no need of,
As for him whose wealth made me self-sufficient
I do not care if he shuns me.
I care not if he abandons me
وَمَنand whoever رَآنيsaw me بِعَينِwith an eye نَقصٍdeficiency
رَأَيتُهُI saw him بِالَّتيwith that same eye رَآنيhe saw me
And whoever sees me with an eye for flaws,
And whoever looked on me with belittling eyes
I see him with the same eye with which he sees me.
I looked on him with the same eyes he looked on me
وَمَنand whoever رَآنيsaw me بِعَينِwith an eye تَمٍّperfection
رَأَيتُهُI saw him كامِلَcomplete المَعانيthe qualities
And whoever sees me with an eye for perfection,
And whoever looked on me with admiring eyes
I see him as perfect in his qualities.
I looked on him as the embodiment of meanings
