أَجودُI give generously بِمَوجودٍof what I have وَلَوand even if بِتُI spend the night طاوِياًhungry
عَلىfrom الجوعِhunger كَشحاًa flank وَالحَشاand the innards يَتَأَلَّمُache
I give generously of what I have, even if I spend the night hungry,
I give generously though I have but little,
my flank drawn in by hunger, while my insides ache.
Bearing hunger and living in hardship.
وَأُظهِرُand I display أَسبابَsigns الغِنىwealth بَينَamong رِفقَتيmy companions
لَيَخفاهُمُso it stays hidden from them حاليmy condition وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمُعدَمُtruly destitute
And I display signs of wealth among my companions,
I show signs of wealth among my friends,
so my condition stays hidden from them, though I am truly destitute.
Lest my state expose my poverty.
وَبَينيand between me وَبَينَand between اللَهِGod أَشكوI complain of فاقَتيmy poverty
حَقيقاًin truth فَإِنَّfor indeed اللَهَGod بِالحالِof the condition أَعلَمُmost knowledgeable
And between myself and God, I complain of my poverty,
Between God and I, I confess my want,
in truth, for God knows my condition best.
For God knows best my true condition.
