سَهَريmy staying awake لِتَنقيحِto refine العُلومِthe sciences أَلَذُّmore delightful ليto me
مِنthan وَصلِunion with غانِيَةٍa beautiful woman وَطيبِand the sweetness of عِناقِan embrace
My sleepless nights refining the sciences are more delightful to me
Than union with a beautiful woman and the sweetness of an embrace.
وَصَريرُand the scratching of أَقلاميmy pens عَلىupon صَفَحاتِهاtheir pages
أَحلىsweeter مِنَthan الدَوكاءِDawkāʾ (a musical mode) وَالعُشّاقِand ʿUshshāq (a musical mode)
And the scratching of my pens upon their pages
Is sweeter than the melodies of Dawkāʾ and ʿUshshāq.
وَأَلَذُّand more delightful مِنthan نَقرِthe tapping of الفَتاةِthe girl لِدَفِّهاon her tambourine
نَقريmy tapping لِأُلقيto cast off الرَملَthe sand عَنfrom أَوراقيmy pages
And more delightful than the girl's tapping on her tambourine
Is my tapping to shake the sand from my pages.
وَتَمايُليand my swaying طَرَباًin delight لِحَلِّto solve عَويصَةٍa difficult problem
فيin الدَرسِstudy أَشهىmore pleasing مِنthan مُدامَةِthe wine of ساقِa cupbearer
And my swaying in delight at solving a difficult problem
In study is more pleasing than a cupbearer's wine.
وَأَبيتُand I spend the night سَهرانَawake الدُجىthe night's darkness وَتَبِيتُهُwhile you spend it
نَوماًasleep وَتَبغيand you seek بَعدَafter ذاكَthat لِحاقيto catch up with me
And I spend the dark night awake, while you spend it
Asleep, yet after that you seek to catch up with me.
