لَمَّاwhen عَفَوْتُI forgave وَلَمْand did not أحْقِدْbear a grudge عَلَىagainst أحَدٍanyone
أرحتُI relieved نفسيmyself منof همَّthe worry of العداواتِenmities
When I forgave and bore no grudge against anyone,
I freed myself from the burden of enmities.
إنِّيindeed I أُحَييgreet عَدُوِّيmy enemy عنْدَupon رُؤْيَتِهِseeing him
لأدفعَto ward off الشَّرَّevil عنيfrom me بالتحياتِwith greetings
Indeed, I greet my enemy when I see him,
To ward off evil from myself with greetings.
وأُظْهِرُand I show الْبِشرَcheerfulness لِلإِنْسَانِto the person أُبْغِضهُI hate him
كماas إنْif قدْalready حَشىhe filled قَلْبيmy heart مَحَبَّاتِaffections
And I show cheerfulness to the person I hate,
As if he had filled my heart with love.
النَّاسُpeople داءٌa malady وَدَاءُand the malady of النَّاسِpeople قُرْبُهُمُtheir closeness
وفيand in اعتزالهمُwithdrawing from them قطعُsevering المودَّاتِbonds of affection
People are a malady, and people's malady is their closeness;
And withdrawing from them severs bonds of affection.
