وَأَنزَلَنيand lodged me طولُthe length of النَوىseparation دارَan abode غُربَةٍexile
وَأَنزَلَني طولُ النَوى دارَ غُربَةٍ
إِذاwhenever شِئتُI wish لاقَيتُI encounter أَمراًa matter لاnot أُشاكِلُهI resemble it
إِذا شِئتُ لاقَيتُ أَمراً لا أُشاكِلُه
And long separation has lodged me in an abode of exile.
The length of my yearning brought me to the abode of estrangement,
Whenever I wish, I encounter something unlike me.
If I wish, I will find something I do not resist,
أُحامِقُهُI play the fool with it حَتّىuntil تُقالَis called سَجِيَّةٌan innate disposition
أُحامِقُهُ حَتّى تُقالَ سَجِيَّةٌ
وَلَوand if كانَit were ذاpossessed of عَقلٍreason لَكُنتُthen I would be أُعاقِلُهI reason with it
وَلَو كانَ ذا عَقلٍ لَكُنتُ أُعاقِلُه
I play the fool with it until this is called an innate disposition.
I act foolishly until it is said, obstinacy,
And if it had reason, I would reason with it.
If he had intellect, I would have acted rationally.
