قَريبٌclose مِنto عَدوٍّan enemy فيin القِياسِcomparison
A friend who is no help on a day of distress
A friend who offers no help on a day of hardship
is, by that measure, close to an enemy.
Is akin to an enemy by comparison.
وَماand not يَبقىremains الصَديقُthe friend بِكلِّin every عَصرٍage
وَلاnor الإِخوانُthe brothers إِلّاexcept لِلتَآسيfor mutual consolation
No friend endures through every age,
In every age, no friend remains,
nor brothers, save to share one another’s sorrows.
Nor do brothers, except for mutual consolation.
عَمَرتُI lived through الدَهرَa lifetime مُلتَمِساًseeking بِجُهديwith my effort

أَخاa brother ثِقَةٍtrustworthiness فَأَلهانيso it preoccupied me اِلتِماسيmy search
I spent my lifetime seeking with all my might
I spent my lifetime seeking with all my effort
a brother I could trust—my search consumed me.
A trustworthy brother, and my search preoccupied me.
تَنَكَّرَتِbecame unfamiliar البِلادُthe lands وَمَنand those who عَلَيهاare upon them
كَأَنَّas though أُناسَهاtheir people لَيسواthey are not بِناسيmy people
The lands and all who dwell upon them have grown strange,
The lands and those upon them have grown strange,
as though their people were no people at all.
As though their people were not my people.
