إِنّيindeed I أُعَزّيكَoffer you condolences لاnot أَنّيbecause I عَلىin طَمَعٍhope
إِنّي أُعَزّيكَ لا أَنّي عَلى طَمَعٍ
مِنَfor الخُلودِimmortality وَلَكِنand yet سُنَّةُthe custom الدينِthe faith
مِنَ الخُلودِ وَلَكِن سُنَّةُ الدينِ
I offer you condolences, not because I hope
I comfort you not because I hope
For immortality, but because it is the custom of the faith.
For immortality, but as our faith ordains.
فَماfor ... not المُعَزّىthe one consoled بِباقٍenduring بَعدَafter صاحِبِهِhis companion
فَما المُعَزّى بِباقٍ بَعدَ صاحِبِهِ
وَلاand not المُعَزّيthe consoler وَإِنand even if عاشاthey both live إِلىuntil حينِa time
وَلا المُعَزّي وَإِن عاشا إِلى حينِ
For the one consoled will not live forever after his companion,
No comfort lasts when one's companion goes -
Nor will the consoler, even if both live for a time.
And comforter, though spared, soon follows on.
