سَيُفْتَحُwill be opened بَابٌa door إِذَاwhen سُدَّis shut بَابُa door
نَعَمْyes، وَتهُونُand grow easy الأُمُورُthe matters الصِّعَابُdifficult
A door will be opened when a door is shut.
A door will open when a door is closed
Yes, and difficult matters will grow easy.
Yes, and difficulties will become easy
وَيتَّسِعُand opens up الحَالُthe situation مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter مَاthat
تَضِيقُgrow narrow المَذَاهِبُthe paths فِيهَاwithin it الرِّحَابُspacious
And circumstances will open up after
And the situation will widen after
the spacious paths within them have narrowed.
The paths have narrowed in it
مَعَwith الهَمِّworry يُسْرَانِtwo reliefs هَوِّنْmake it easier عَلَيْكَon yourself
فَلاَfor neither الْهَمُّworry يُجْدِيis useful، وَلاَnor الاكْتِئَابُdejection
With worry come two reliefs; be gentle with yourself.
With worries there are two reliefs, make it easy on yourself
For neither worry nor dejection is of any use.
Neither will worrying avail, nor despair
فَكَمْfor how often ضِقْتَyou felt constrained ذَرْعاًin endurance بِمَاby what هِبْتَهُyou feared it
فَلَمْyet not يُرَwas seen مِنْof ذَاكَthat قَدْرٌan amount يُهَابُworth fearing
For how often you felt overwhelmed by what you dreaded,
How often you were distressed by what befell you
yet none of it proved worth fearing.
Yet none of that was considered dreadful
وَكَمْand how much بَرَدٍhail خِفْتَهُyou feared it مِنْfrom سَحَابٍa cloud
فَعُوفِيتso you were spared، وَانْجَابَand cleared away عَنْكَfrom you السَّحَابُthe cloud
And how often you feared hail from a cloud,
And how much cold you feared from a cloud
yet you were spared, and the cloud cleared away from you.
But you were kept safe, and the clouds shielded you
وَرِزْقٍand provision أَتَاكَcame to you وَلَمْand did not تَأْتِهِyou go to it

وَلاَnor أَرَّقَkept sleepless العَيْنَthe eye مِنْهُfor it الطِّلابُthe pursuit
And provision came to you without your seeking it,
And sustenance that came to you though you did not seek it
nor did pursuing it rob the eye of sleep.
Nor did seeking it keep the eye awake
وَنَاءٍand one far away عَنٍfrom الأَهْلِthe family مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter مَاthat

And one far from his family, after
And attaining the family's closeness after
a towering surge of waves had risen over him.
The billowing, high waves had come between you
إِذَاif احْتَجَبَhid away النَّاسُthe people عَنْfrom سَائِلٍa supplicant
فَمَاthen there is no دُونَbefore سَائِلِone asking رَبِّيmy Lord حِجَابُa veil
If people shut themselves away from a supplicant,
When people withhold from a questioner
there is no veil before one who asks my Lord.
There is no veil between me and my Lord's questioner
يَعُودُbestows بِفَضْلٍwith bounty عَلَىupon مَنْwhoever رَجَاهُhoped in Him
وَرَاجِيهِand one hoping in Him فِيat كُلِّevery حِينٍtime يُجَابُis answered
He bestows bounty upon whoever hopes in Him,
He returns with grace to the one who hoped in Him
and whoever hopes in Him is answered at all times.
And His hopers are answered at all times
فَلاَso do not تَأْسَgrieve يَوْماًever عَلَىover فَائِتٍsomething missed
وَعِنْدَكَand you have مِنْهُconcerning it رِضَىّcontentment وَاحْتِسَابُand seeking divine reward
So never grieve over what has passed you by,
So do not despair over something missed
while you have acceptance of it and hope of divine reward.
While being content with it and resigned is with you
فَلاَfor there is no بُدَّescape مِنْfrom كَوْنِthe occurrence مَاwhat خُطَّwas inscribed فِيin
كِتَابِكَyour book، تُحْبَىyou are favored بِهِthrough it أَوْor تُصَابُyou are afflicted
For there is no escaping the fulfillment of what is inscribed in
What is decreed in your book must come to pass
your book: through it you are favored or afflicted.
Whether you are rewarded or stricken by it
فَمَنْthen who حَائِلٌone who obstructs دُونَin the way of مَاwhat فِيin الكِتَابِthe book
وَمَنْand who مُرْسِلٌone who sends forth مَاwhat أَبَاهُrejected it الكِتَابُthe book؟
Who, then, can stand in the way of what is in the book,
Who can prevent what is in the Book?
and who can bring forth what the book has rejected?
And who can send what the Book has refused?
إِذَاif لَمْnot تَكُنْyou are تَارِكَاًabandoning زِينَةٌan adornment
إِذَاwhen الْمَرْءُthe man جَاءَcame بِهَاwith it يُسْتَرابُis suspected
If you do not abandon an adornment
If you do not leave off an adornment
that makes a man suspect when he appears with it,
When a man comes with it, he is suspected
تَقَعْyou fall فِيin مَوَاقِعplaces تردىyou meet ruin بِهَاin them
وَتَهْوَىand plunge إِلَيْكَtoward you السِّهَامُthe arrows الصّيَابُunerring
you will fall into places where you meet your ruin,
You will fall into positions that degrade you
and unerring arrows will plunge toward you.
And arrows of blame will descend upon you
تَبَيَّنْunderstand clearly زَمَانَكَyour age ذَاthis واقْتَصِدْand be moderate
فَإِنَّfor indeed زَمَانَكَyour age هَذَاthis عَذَابُtorment
Understand this age of yours, and be moderate,
Discern your time, which is suffering, and be moderate
for this age of yours is torment.
For your time now is torment
وَأَقْلِلْand lessen عِتَابَاًreproach فَمَاfor there is no فِيهِin it مَنْanyone who
يُعَاتِبُreproaches حِينَwhen يَحِقُّis deserved العِتَابُreproach
And lessen reproach, for in it there is no one
And minimize reproaching, for there is no one
who reproaches when reproach is deserved.
To reproach when reproach is deserved
مَضَىpassed away النَّاسُthe people طُرّاًall وَبَادُواand they perished سِوَىexcept
أَرَاذِلwretches عَنْهُمْabove them تُجَلُّare held in honor الكِلاَبُthe dogs
All people have passed away and perished, except
The people passed frivolously and perished but for
wretches whom even dogs surpass in honor.
The riffraff, from whom dogs recoil
يُلاَقِيكَmeets you بِالبِشْرِwith cheerfulness دَهْمَاؤُهُمْtheir rabble
وَتَسْلِيمُand the greeting مَنْwhoever رَقَّwas gentle مِنْهُمْamong them سِبَابُabuse
Their rabble meets you with a cheerful face,
They will meet you with their ignorance
and the greeting of a gentle one among them is abuse.
And the surrender of those made docile by beating
فَأَحْسِنْso do good، وَمَاand what الحُرُّthe noble man مُسْتَحْسِنٌfinds commendable
صِيَانٌprotection لَهُمْfor them عَنْهُمُfrom them وَاجْتِنَابُand avoidance
So do good; what a noble man finds commendable
So do good, and the noble one is doing good
is protection for them from themselves, and avoidance.
Shielding himself from them and avoiding
فَإِنْfor if يُغْنِهِmakes him independent اللّهGod عَنْهُمْof them يَفرْhe flees
وَإِلاَّand otherwise فَذَاكَthen that فِيْمَاin what الخَطَاerror وَالصَّوابُand correctness
For if God makes him independent of them, he flees;
If God enriches him beyond need of them, he will rejoice
otherwise, that is where error and right judgment lie.
Otherwise, that is among the rights and wrongs
فَدَعْso leave مَاwhat هَوَيتَyou desired، فَإِنَّfor indeed الهَوَىdesire
يَقُودُleads النُّفَوسَthe souls إِلَىtoward مَاwhat يُعَابُis blameworthy
So leave what you desire, for desire
Leave what your passion desires, for desire
leads souls toward what is blameworthy.
Leads souls to what would be blamed
وَمَيِّزْand assess carefully كَلاَمَكَyour speech قَبْلَbefore الكَلاَمِspeaking
فَإِنَّfor indeed لِكُلِّfor every كَلاَمٍutterance جَوَابُa reply
And weigh your words before speaking,
And distinguish your words before speaking
for every utterance has a reply.
For every word has an answer
فَرُبَّfor many a كَلامٍword يَمُضُّpains الحَشَاthe heart
وَفِيهِand in it مِنَof المَزْحِjesting مَاwhat يُسُتَطَابُis found pleasing
For many a word pains the heart,
For there is much speech that is entertaining
though it contains jesting that is found pleasing.
And yet contains what would be found distasteful
