إذاwhen غابَwas absent عنيfrom me أبيmy father ليfor me حاضِناa guardian وأَباand a father
You are the son of my uncle, who was, after my father,
You are my cousin who came after my father
When my father was absent from me, a guardian and father to me.
When my father was absent, you were my caretaker and father
ماnot إِنemphasizing the negation عَرفتُI have known سوىother than عَمّيmy paternal uncle أبيكَyour father أباًa father
ولاnor سِواكother than you أخاًa brother طِفلاًas a child ولاnor شِيَباwhen gray-haired
I have known no father but my uncle, your father,
I have known no one but your father as a father
Nor any brother but you, in childhood or when gray-haired.
And no one but you as a brother, neither as a child nor old man
كمhow often فرّجتْrelieved يدُكyour hand اليُمنىthe right بذيwith one bearing شُطَبٍgrooves on a sword

How often your right hand, with a grooved sword, has lifted
How often has your right hand relieved me
The sorrows from my face in a dire predicament.
In dire straits and distress from worries

And these are polytheists, with no share of good;
And these are people of partnership who have no morals
Whoever dies becomes firewood for a fire set ablaze.
Whoever among them died, was for a fire whose wood was gathered
