The book of the deaths of lovers,
The book of those vanquished by passion's hands,
And of those whom the hands of separation have slain.
And by the blows of fate their souls unmanned.

عفيفchaste in الضمائرinmost thoughts جمfull of الجوىlove's anguish
عفيف الضمائر جم الجوى
A lover took pains to compile it,
An ardent lover undertook its rhymes,
Chaste in his inmost thoughts, full of love's anguish.
Pure in spirit, rich in gentle times.
أضلhe lost برملin the sand of اللوىal-Liwā قلبهhis heart
أضل برمل اللوى قلبه
فهلso is there ناشدone seeking قلبهhis heart باللوىat al-Liwā
فهل ناشد قلبه باللوى
He lost his heart in the sands of al-Liwā;
Lost in the desert of love's dream his heart,
So is there anyone seeking his heart at al-Liwā?
Can broken hearts find peace in dreams apart?
