يعاود النكس إذا فرقا
Oh, my heart's anguish today! What ails it?
O yearning of my heart, what ails it today?
It relapses whenever it recovers.
It returns to sadness when we part.

قد بلغ السيل الزبى وارتقى
Is there solace? Far from it—there is no solace.
Solace, alas no solace,
The flood has reached the hilltops and risen higher.
The torrent has reached the neck and risen higher.

Do not, you two, seek to cure a lover's passion with charms;
Do not aspire in love, O enamored one,
For charms are of no avail in love.
For with love, no charms are of any use.
