فادال الله يا يوم النوى
منكagainst you إذsince اقلقتنيyou troubled me يومday اللقاof meeting
منك إذ اقلقتني يوم اللقا
So may God grant me redress, O day of parting,
So grant me, O day of intent
against you, for you troubled me on the day of meeting.
Solace from you, since you disturbed me the day we met
إنindeed فيin نهرcanal المعلىal-Muʿallā فرهداًa handsome, full-bodied youth
إن في نهر المعلى فرهداً
قمراًa moon منfrom فوقabove غصنa bough فيin نقاa sand dune
قمراً من فوق غصن في نقا
Indeed, in Nahr al-Muʿallā there is a handsome, full-bodied youth,
In the lofty river there is a young horse
a moon above a bough in a sand dune.
A moon above a branch in a meadow
عقرباa scorpion صدغيةof the temple تسريcreeps فاذاand when
عقربا صدغية تسري فاذا
لدغتit stings قلباًa heart تحامتهshun it الرقىhealing charms
لدغت قلباً تحامته الرقى
A scorpion at his temple creeps, and when
A deadly scorpion that creeps, so if
it stings a heart, healing charms shun it.
