لحىmay curse اللهGod يومthe day of البينparting كمhow much دمblood عاشقٍof a lover
أراقواthey shed بهon it لاnot يطلبونthey are pursued بثارهfor his blood's vengeance
May God curse the day of parting—how much lovers' blood
The shade of separation on the day when lovers shed
they shed that day, with no vengeance sought against them!
Blood, without seeking revenge,
وعاذلةand a reproachful woman أضحتshe began تلومshe chides علىfor الهوىlove
أخاa man of لوعةٍburning anguish لماnot yet يفقhe recovers منfrom خمارهhis drunken stupor
And a reproachful woman began, for love, to chide
And the reproacher began to blame love itself
a man of burning anguish, not yet recovered from his drunken stupor.
For a brother's agony when he wakes from his drunkenness,
واغيدand a graceful youth فيamid جيشan army منof الحسنbeauty أفتدىI would ransom
لماهhis lips' dark hue وعينيهand his eyes وخطand the line of عذارهhis cheek-down
And a graceful youth amid an army of beauty—I would ransom
And I ransom myself with an army of beauty
the dusky hue of his lips, his eyes, and the line of down upon his cheeks.
For his waters and his eyes and the line of his neck,
حكىresembled الظبيthe gazelle ظبيthe gazelle of الرملthe sands جيداًin neck ومقلةand eye
فياso, ah ليتهwould that he لمhad not يحكهresembled it فيin نفارهhis skittishness
The gazelle resembled the gazelle of the sands in neck and eye;
The wild deer told of the wild deer of the sands and eyelashes
ah, would that he had not resembled it in his skittishness!
Oh, would that he had not told of it in his aloofness.
