إن غرامي يا أبا مسلم

الى غريمي في الهوى مسلمي

Indeed my passion, O Abu Muslim,

delivers me to my adversary in love.

فلا تسل يوم النوى عن دمٍ

سال من الأجفان كالعندم

So do not ask, on the day of parting, about blood

that flowed from my eyelids like crimson dye,

حتى بدت لي من منى ظبية

ما بين شعب الخيف والمأزم

until a gazelle from Mina appeared to me,

between the ravine of al-Khayf and al-Ma'zim.

أعرتها طرف خلى من ال

وجد فغارت واستحلت دمي

I lent her the gaze of one free of

longing; so she grew jealous and deemed my blood lawful.

فقلت والأجفان منهلة

من سقم في جفنها مسقمي

So I said, while my eyelids streamed,

from an ailment in her eyelid that sickens me:

الله يا ظبية خيفي مني

في محرمٍ لولاك لم يحرم

For God's sake, O gazelle of Mina's twin slopes,

spare a pilgrim who, but for you, would not have entered ihram.

وإنما حج ليلقاك في

جملة من يلقاك في الموسم

And he made the pilgrimage only to meet you among

the throng who meet you in the pilgrimage season.

أبحت ما حرمه الله من

قتل حنيف ناسكٍ محرم

You made lawful what God forbade—

killing an upright monotheist, a devout pilgrim in ihram.

ردي عليه قلبه تؤجري

ولا تسبيحي دمه تأثمي

Restore his heart to him, and you will be rewarded;

and do not deem his blood lawful, lest you incur sin.

لا تقتليه فله معشر

ما الدهر من بأسهم محتمي

Do not kill him, for he has a clan

from whose might Time itself has no shelter.
