And many a night we spent upon the sand,
How many a night we spent on the sand
As though we were children upon mattresses.
Like a young doe atop the cushions

Whenever she smiled, with night's curtain lowered,
When you smiled and the veil of night lowered
The lightning of her front teeth lit the darkness for us.
The darkness lit up for us with the lightning of teeth
نديرwe exchange حديثtales منwhoever قتلتهslew him خودa lovely maiden
ومنand whoever فيin الحبlove نالتهbefell him الرزاياthe calamities
We traded tales of those a lovely maiden slew,
We talk of those whom self-conceit has killed
And those whom calamities befell in love,
And those whom misfortunes in love have afflicted
كمجنونlike Majnun وقيسand Qays قيسQays لبنيLubna
ومنand whoever أبدىrevealed لهto him الحبlove الخباياthe secrets
Like Majnun and Qays—Qays of Lubna—
Like Majnun and Qays for Layla
And those to whom love revealed its secrets.
And those who revealed to them their inner secrets
