ياO ساكنيdwellers of البلدthe city الحرامthe sacred اعندكمis it, in your view?
يا ساكني البلد الحرام اعندكم
حلpermission to shed دمthe blood of العشاقthe lovers غيرnot حرامforbidden
حل دم العشاق غير حرام
O dwellers of the sacred city, do you deem
O dwellers of the sacred land, do you not
the shedding of lovers’ blood lawful, not forbidden?
Consider the blood of lovers to be sacred
قالواthey said أمالكhave you no? فيin جميلٍJamil أسوةٌan example to follow
قالوا أمالك في جميلٍ أسوةٌ
والعامريand al-Amiri وعروةand Urwah بنson of حزامHizam
والعامري وعروة بن حزام
They said, “Have you no example to follow in Jamil,
They said look to Amr and Orwa ibn Hizam
and al-Amiri, and Urwah ibn Hizam?”
And the virtuous example they set
لماwhen شكوتI complained of صدىthirst إلىfor بردcoolness اللمىthe lips’ dark hue
لما شكوت صدى إلى برد اللمى
وتيقنواand they knew for certain أنيthat I اليهfor it ظاميthirsty
وتيقنوا أني اليه ظامي
When I complained of thirst for the coolness of dusky lips,
When I complained of the beloved's coldness
and they knew for certain that I thirsted for it,
And they realized my suffering
قالواthey said عليكyou should turn بماءto the water of زمزمZamzam قلتI said ماnot
قالوا عليك بماء زمزم قلت ما
فيin ماءthe water of زمزمZamzam ماthat which يبلquenches أواميmy burning thirst
في ماء زمزم ما يبل أوامي
they said, “Turn to Zamzam’s water.” I said, “There is nothing
They said drink of Zamzam's water, I said
in Zamzam’s water to quench my burning thirst.”
Zamzam's water cannot quench my thirst
قالواthey said فقدyet indeed حظرforbade العفافchastity ورودهdrinking from it
قالوا فقد حظر العفاف وروده
والصونand modesty بعدbesides وملةand the faith of الإسلامIslam
والصون بعد وملة الإسلام
They said, “Yet chastity has forbidden drinking from it,
They said chastity has forbidden access
as have modesty besides, and the faith of Islam.”
