سُيوفُكُمُyour swords بحَمدِwith praise to اللهِGod نَفْعٌbenefit
إذاwhen كانتare سيوفُthe swords of الناسِpeople ضُرَّاharm
Your swords, praise be to God, bring benefit,
when other people's swords bring harm.
فَلِمْso why قَصُرَتare short وأيديكُمwhile your hands طِوالٌare long
تُحكَّمُare given authority فيover رِقابِthe necks of الناسِpeople طُرّاall
Why, then, are they short, while your hands are long,
given power over the necks of all people?
وماand why لفِراخِكمwith your fledglings تَبْيَضُّturn white لوناًin color
فإنyet if زَفَّتْthey flutter شآهاfills them الزقُّbeak-feeding حُمراred
And why do your fledglings turn white in hue,
yet, if they flutter, beak-feeding fills them red?
وماand no لجريحِكمfor the one you wound وِترٌclaim for vengeance عليكمagainst you
وكلُّand every جِراحةٍwound تُعتَدُّis reckoned وِتراa wrong to be avenged
And the one you wound has no claim for vengeance against you,
though every wound is reckoned a wrong to be avenged.
ورُبَّand many a جَريرَةٍoffense شنعاءَheinous ساقَتْhas brought

And many a heinous offense has brought
to its perpetrator praise and renown.
أرىI see أفعالَكمyour deeds أفعالَdeeds of عِزٍّhonor
فلِمْso why أنتُمyou بِفَرْطِof extreme الذُّلِّabasement أحرىmore deserving
I see your deeds as deeds of honor,
so why are you more deserving of utter abasement?
