Your abode is more cheerful through union with loved ones;
Your abode is solace to lovers, a companion,
And your bough sways with the waters of youth.
And your branch drinks from the water of youth.
تمتَّعْenjoy منof اللَّذَّاتِpleasures قبلَbefore نَفادِهاtheir exhaustion
وبادِرْand hasten فإنّاfor we are للخُطوبِto calamities فَرائِسُprey
Enjoy pleasures before they are spent;
Enjoy the pleasures before they disappear,
And hasten, for we are prey to calamities.
And be quick, for we are prone to misfortune.

Ah, how lovely the meadow with its languid breeze,
If only this gentle morning breeze
When the bells awaken me for morning wine,
Would awaken me at dawn with bells ringing,
ومالَتْand swayed غُصونٌboughs زيَّنَتْهاadorned them مَناطِقٌgirdles

And boughs sway, adorned with girdles,
And branches adorned with ribbons swayed,
And suns shine forth, crowned by pitch-dark nights.
As brilliant suns crowned with diadems shone.

And Babylon's wine goes round among the drinking companions—
A bride, possessing the beauty of youth, circulated
A bride possessing youth's beauty, though she is long unwed.
Among the drinkers, pouring Babylonian wine.
أَلمdid ... not? تَرنيyou see me أجرَرْتُI let trail فيin اللَّهوِrevelry مِقوَديmy rein
فأَضحَكْتُso I made laugh أيَّاميmy days وهُنَّthough they were عَوابِسُfrowning
Did you not see me let my rein trail in revelry,
Did you not see me lead my destiny to frivolity,
And so make my days laugh, though they were frowning?
Laughing through days that were frowning?
ولمand did not أَعْبَpay heed بالوعْدِto the promise الذيthat وَعَدَpromised الوَرىhumankind
فمَنْso whoever كانwas يرجوهhopes for it فإنيI, for my part, am آيسُwithout hope
Nor did I heed the promise made to humankind;
I did not weary myself with the promise the world made,
Whoever else may hope for it, I have despaired.
So let whoever hopes for it do so, for I despair.
