قسمتَyou divided قلبيَmy heart بينَbetween الهمِّanxiety والكَمَدِand grief
ومُقلتيand my eye بينbetween فَيْضِa flood الدَّمعِtears والسَّهَدِand sleeplessness
You divided my heart between anxiety and grief,
You divided my heart between worry and sorrow,
and my eye between a flood of tears and sleeplessness.
And my eyelids between overflowing tears and wakefulness.
ورُحْتَand you became فيin الحُسْنِbeauty أشكالاًforms مُقَسَّمةًapportioned
بينَbetween الهِلالِthe crescent وبينَand between الغُصنِthe bough والعُقَدِand the knots
And in your beauty you became forms apportioned
And you appeared in beauty forms divided,
between the crescent, the bough, and the knots.
Between the crescent, the branch, and the knot.
أرينَنيthey showed me مطَراًrain يَنهَلُّpours down ساكبُهits pouring stream
منfrom الجفُونِthe eyelids وبَرْقاًand lightning لاحَflashed منfrom بَرَدِhail
They showed me rain whose torrent pours down
Show me rain pouring down in streams,
from the eyelids, and lightning flashing from hailstones;
From the eyelids, and lightning flashing from the cold.
ووجنةًand a cheek لاnot يُروِّيquenches ماؤهاits water ظمأthirst
بُخلاًout of stinginess وقدand already لَذَعَتْscorched نيرانُهاits fires كَبِديmy liver
and a cheek whose water quenches no thirst,
And a cheek not quenched of thirst by its water,
out of stinginess, though its fires have scorched my liver.
Stingy, though its fires have scorched my liver.
فكيفَso how أُبْقيI spare علىupon ماءِthe water الشُّؤونِthe tear ducts وماand not

So how can I spare the water of my tear ducts, when
How can I remain with the water of preoccupations, and what
passion has spared neither my patience nor my endurance?
Passion left of my patience or composure?
جرَىraced ابنُson of فَهْدٍFahd فلمso not يُدْرَكْbe reached لهfor him أَمَدٌa limit
وكلُّand every ذيpossessor of سُؤدُدٍeminence يجريraces إلىtoward أَمَدِa limit
Ibn Fahd raced, and no limit to his course could be reached;
Ibn Fahd flowed and no term was attained for him,
and everyone of high standing races toward a limit.
And everyone with flowing generosity flows to the term.
وحَنَّand he yearned للجُودِfor generosity مُهْتَزَاًquivering ومُنتَصِباًand upright
كالرُّمحِlike a spear لمnot يُؤْتَbe faulted منfor مَيلٍleaning ولاnor أَوَدِcrookedness
And he yearned for generosity, quivering and upright,
He inclined to generosity shaking and standing upright,
like a spear, faulted for neither leaning nor crookedness.
Like a spear not inclined to bending or deviation.
وعلَّمَand he taught الدَّهْرَTime منfrom أخلاقِهِhis character خُلُقاًa virtue
أذكىmore fragrant منthan الوَرْدِroses أوor أَحْلَىsweeter منthan الشَّهْدِhoney
And he taught Time a virtue from his own character,
And he taught time from his manners a manner,
more fragrant than roses or sweeter than honey.
Livelier than the rose or sweeter than honey.
فالمَجدُthus glory منهfrom him عُلىًheights مقرونةٌjoined بِعُلىًto heights
والجُودُand generosity منهfrom him يدٌa hand موصولةٌjoined بيدِto a hand
Thus his glory is heights joined to heights,
So glory from him is heights linked to heights,
and his generosity is a hand joined to a hand.
And generosity from him a hand joined to hands.
فَضلانِtwo virtues ماnot زالَceased مَحسوداًenvied بنَيْلِهِماfor attaining them both
والبأسُand valor والجودُand generosity مَقرونانِboth coupled بالحَسَدِwith envy
Two virtues whose possession has always made him envied;
The excellences of two never ceasing to be envied for their attainment,
and valor and generosity are coupled with envy.
And valor and generosity coupled with envy.
أَغرُّradiant لاno صَلَفٌconceit يُزريdetracts بسُؤدُدِهfrom his eminence
بينَamong الملوكِthe kings ولاnor كِبْرٌarrogance علىtoward أحدِanyone
Radiant and noble: no conceit mars his eminence
A flirt not stiff wearing his flowing garb,
among kings, nor is he haughty toward anyone.
Among the kings, or haughty towards anyone.

His speech shows you, through the delicacy of its words,
His speech shows you from the softness of expressions,
the pearls of necklaces whose knots have come undone.
Pearls of necklaces dissolved of knots.
جعلتُهI made him جُنَّةًa shield منagainst كلِّevery نائبةٍcalamity
ورُحْتُand I came to be منthrough جُودِهhis generosity فيin جَنَّةِthe garden الخُلدِeternity
I made him a shield against every calamity,
I made him a paradise safe from every misfortune,
and through his generosity I came into the Garden of Eternity.
And I, through his generosity, am in the paradise of eternity.
أباO father of الفوارسِthe horsemen أحييتَyou revived السَّماحَgenerosity لناfor us
وقُمْتَand you stood فيهwithin it قِيامَthe sustaining role الروحِthe soul للجَسَدِfor the body
O Abu al-Fawaris, you revived generosity for us,
O father of the knights, you revived generosity for us,
and were to it what the soul is to the body.
And you stood for it with the standing of the spirit for the body.
ماnot رُمْتُI sought إحصاءَenumeration ماwhat أوليتَضyou bestowed منof حَسَنٍgoodness
إلاexcept وزادَand it exceeded علىbeyond الإحصاءِreckoning والعَدَدِand number
Never have I tried to count the kindness you bestowed
I did not attempt enumerating the good you were granted,
without its exceeding all reckoning and number.
Except it surpassed enumeration and counting.
آثرْتَyou preferred فيduring الصَّومِfasting تَقوىpiety اللهِGod مُجتهداًstriving earnestly

علىover هواكَyour desire وبِعتَand you sold الغَيَّerror بالرَّشَدِfor right guidance
While fasting, you earnestly preferred reverence for God
You preferred, exerting yourself, fear of God in fasting,
to your own desire, and traded error for right guidance.
Over your desires, and sold the unknown for guidance.
فآسعَدْso rejoice بِعيدٍin an Eid أعادَrestored الَّلهوَmerriment فيin سَعَةٍabundance
واليُمْنَand good fortune فيin دَعَةٍease والعيشَand life فيin رَغَدِplenty
So rejoice in an Eid that restored merriment in abundance,
So have a happy holiday which God returned in ease,
and good fortune in ease, and life in plenty.
And prosperity in calm, and life in comfort.
تَقدَّمَتْwent before مِدْحَةٌa poem of praise زَهراءُradiant مُشرِقَةٌshining
كالرَّوْضِlike a garden يَضْحَكُlaughs عنrevealing نُوَّارَةِthe bloom الخَضَدِtender boughs
A radiant, shining poem of praise had gone before,
A shining eulogy advanced, glowing,
like a garden laughing to reveal the bloom of tender boughs.
Like a garden laughing with the radiance of green plants.
وجاشَand surged بَحْريmy sea فلمso not أقَنعْI was content بواحدةٍwith one
حتىuntil أتيتُI came بهاwith it مُشتدَّةgrown strong العَضُدِthe upper arm
And my sea surged, so I was not content with one,
And my sea surged but I did not content myself with one,
until I brought it forth, its arm grown strong:
Until I came with it, strong of arm.

a necklace through which thought roamed, and so it was strung
A necklace in which thought roamed and was strung together,
as necklaces are strung, with nothing lacking or in excess.
In the stringing of necklaces, neither lessened nor increased.
