بُؤسَاًwoe لِعرْسِto the wife of الخَالِديِّal-Khalidi بُوسَاwoe
أَكُلَّis it every يَوْمٍday تَغْتدِيyou go forth in the morning عَرْوساa bride
Woe to al-Khalidi’s wife, woe!
Alas for the wedding of al-Khalidi, alas
Do you go forth as a bride every day?
Every day she takes a new groom
خَلَّتْهُshe left him وَاعْتَاضَتْand she took in exchange فَتىًa young man نَفِيساfine
وَفَارَقَتْand she left مِنbecause of نَتْنِهِhis stench نَاوُوساa tomb
She left him and took a fine young man in his place.
She deserted him and chose a precious youth
And left a tomb behind because of his stench.
And parted from his stench for a peacock
فَصَادَفَتْso she found رَبْعَan abode of هوَىًlove مَأنُوسَاcongenial
وبَدَّلتْand she exchanged منْin place of رَخَمٍvultures طاوُوساa peacock
So she found a congenial abode of love.
She found a quarter of familiar passion
And exchanged vultures for a peacock.
And exchanged his ugliness for a peacock
وكيفَand how تَهْوَىshe loves وَجْهَهُhis face العَبُوساscowling
وهيَwhile she تَرَىsees الأقمَارَthe moons والشُّمُوسَاand the suns
And how can she love his scowling face
How could she love his sullen face
When she sees the moons and the suns?
When she sees the moons and suns
