فقد ظَمِئَتْ نفسي وطال شُحوبُها
Wine's beauty and savor have shunned me;
The charm and sweetness of wine avoided me,
For my soul has grown thirsty, and its pallor has lingered.
My soul grew thirsty and its pallor prolonged.

And I have vessels—had their fate shown refinement,
My circumstances, if time would treat them kindly,
Their cup would not have spent the night enthralled by gloom.
Would not spend the night depressed and gloomy.

And disheveled, empty wine jars, as though they were
The dishevelment of empty flasks is as though
The chests of men whose hearts have left them.
They're the chests of men, left devoid of their hearts.
فسُقياكَso, your giving drink لاnot سُقْياthe watering السَّحابِof the clouds فإنَّهاfor it

هيَ العِلَّةُ القُصوى وأنتَ طبيبُها
So give me drink yourself, not the clouds, for it
I bid you drink not like the rain clouds, for you
Is the gravest malady, and you are its physician.
Are the foremost cure, and the healer of its need.
