لما تنادى اليوم بالخفوف

منهزما من الظلام الموفي

When day called out for departure,

fleeing the looming darkness,

وآمنت سواكن الحفوف

في كلل الظلماء والسجوف

and the dwellers of the margins felt secure

within the dark night's canopies and curtains,

قدنا لها حتفا من الحتوف

كلبا درير الشد بالخذروف

we led toward them a doom among dooms:

a dog, swift-running as a spinning top,

أبدع في جماله الموصوف

خطما يباهي شمم الأنوف

exquisite in its famed beauty,

with a muzzle rivaling proud, high-bridged noses.

شنّفه الحسن بلا شنوف

وذنب كالنون في الحروف

Beauty adorned its ears without earrings,

and its tail was like nūn among the letters.

يسبق شأو الريح في الصفوف

فالهارب المطلق كالمكتوف

It outruns the wind's utmost speed through the ranks,

so the unfettered fugitive seems trussed up.

والطست والضارب في صنوف

من الثقيل ومن الخفيف

And the basin and its beater, in varied rhythms,

some heavy and some light,

لما رأيت ليلة الكسوف

حتى وقفنا بمهما وقوف

when I saw them on the night of the eclipse,

until we halted beside standing oryx [reading uncertain],

آمنة في البلد المخوف

فاختارها تخير العريف

secure in the feared land.

Then it chose them as an expert chooses,

كناظر ينظر في الصروف

فقرن المهزول بالمعلوف

like an observer studying changing fortunes;

then it paired the lean with the well-fed,

وانصعن في المجهول والمعروف

لا يقف الإلف على المألوف

and they darted through the unknown and the known:

no companion stops for its familiar companion.
