What rhymes have such rare loveliness

that their finest essence takes hearts captive?

    Guarded, yet misfortunes debase them—

the finest in craftsmanship and the most graceful of them.

    Brides left neglected, especially

the finest in craftsmanship and the most graceful of them.

    فصارَ مَنْعُ اللِّئامِ يُحْرِقُها

    The generosity of the noble once made them grow;

but now the withholding of the base burns them.

Go toward glory before a far-roaming poem

that I free from captivity and unleash.

If I clothe you in shields of my praises,

then I have arrows that tear them apart—

far-roaming through the lands; never have they scattered

without your seeing the discerning man dread them.

As for Ibn Fahd, I have come to his

watering places, which he never muddied:

favors that bring forth praises, like the

blossoms that the rain began to open.

So ask him, you two, in the morning, how he grew indifferent

to the rhymes, though he once adored them.

So whenever they appeared before him unveiled,

he turned away from them, though once he gazed at them.

Rare verses he subjected to coldness—and never

has a noble man's coldness ceased to trouble them.

And I give them to no one but him, nor

wilt their brocade and wear them threadbare.

So I shall clothe myself in the beauty of

patience; may God grant them sustenance from him.
