رضا المُتَجنِّي غايةٌ ليسَ تُدرَكُ
وفيand in كلِّevery وَجهٍaspect للتجرُّمِfor finding fault مَسلَكُa path
وفي كلِّ وَجهٍ للتجرُّمِ مَسلَكُ
The unjust faultfinder’s satisfaction is a goal never attained.
Contentment unfeigned is a goal never reached
And in every matter there is a path to finding fault.
And in every aspect depravity has a path

If a friend turns away from me, I leave him
If a companion turns away, I leave him be
To his own nature in making excuses—for excuses hold greater sway.
Judging his nature with excuse - that is best
وَصَلتُكI kept ties with you لمّاwhen كنتَyou were فيَّin your devotion to me مُوَحَّداًa monotheist; exclusively devoted
وَصَلتُك لمّا كنتَ فيَّ مُوَحَّداً
وَعَزَّيْتُand I consoled فيكover you القلبَthe heart إذwhen أنتَyou مُشرِكُa polytheist; devoted to others too
وَعَزَّيْتُ فيك القلبَ إذ أنتَ مُشرِكُ
I kept our bond when you worshipped me alone,
I associated with you while you were devout
And consoled my heart over you when you worshipped others too.
But now my heart finds solace, for you are fickle
