آثارُ جودِكَ في الخُطوبِ تُؤَثِّرُ

آثارُ جودِكَ في الخُطوبِ تُؤَثِّرُ

وجميلُ بِشْرِكَ بالنَّجاحِ يُبَشِّرُ

وجميلُ بِشْرِكَ بالنَّجاحِ يُبَشِّرُ

The marks of your generosity leave their mark on adversity;

The effects of your generosity in hardships have an impact

And your gracious, cheerful countenance heralds success.

And your good tidings of success bring gladness

كانَ ابتداؤُكَ شيمَةً عَدَوِيَّةً

كانَ ابتداؤُكَ شيمَةً عَدَوِيَّةً

تُنبي عن الكَرَمِ التَّليدِ وتُخبِرُ

تُنبي عن الكَرَمِ التَّليدِ وتُخبِرُ

Your first kindness was an ʿAdawī trait,

Your beginning was an act of hostility

Speaking of ancestral generosity and telling of it,

That warned against time-honored generosity and informed

وصنيعةً سَمِعَ الملوكُ بِفَضلِها

وصنيعةً سَمِعَ الملوكُ بِفَضلِها

والجودُ يُسمَعُ والصنَّائعُ تُشهِرُ

والجودُ يُسمَعُ والصنَّائعُ تُشهِرُ

And a favor whose worth kings have heard of;

An act the kings have heard of its virtue

And generosity is heard of, and favors bring renown.

And generosity is heard of while acts are publicized

فعلامَ كفَّ المنعُ منك أناملي

فعلامَ كفَّ المنعُ منك أناملي

وَسَمَاءُ كفِّكَ بالمواهبِ تُمطِرُ

وَسَمَاءُ كفِّكَ بالمواهبِ تُمطِرُ

Why, then, has your withholding held back my fingertips,

So why did abstinence restrain my hands

While the sky of your palm rains down gifts?

And the heavens of your palm rain down gifts

لي من نَوالِكَ كلَّ شَهرٍ عادةٌ

لي من نَوالِكَ كلَّ شَهرٍ عادةٌ

مضَتِ الليالي دونَها والأشهرُ

مضَتِ الليالي دونَها والأشهرُ

I have a customary gift from your bounty each month;

I have the habit each month of gaining from your bestowal

Nights and months have passed without it.

Nights have passed and months while it continues

فابسُطْ بها باعاً يطولُ إلى النَّدى

فابسُطْ بها باعاً يطولُ إلى النَّدى

فيَضيقُ باعُ الخَطبِ فيه ويَقصُرُ

فيَضيقُ باعُ الخَطبِ فيه ويَقصُرُ

So extend your reach through it, far toward generosity,

So extend with it a far reaching hand

So that adversity's reach within it narrows and grows short.

That the scope of hardship in it would narrow and shorten

إن كانَ لي أملٌ سِواكَ أَعُدُّهُ

إن كانَ لي أملٌ سِواكَ أَعُدُّهُ

فكفَرْتُ أنعُمَك التي لا تُكفَرُ

فكفَرْتُ أنعُمَك التي لا تُكفَرُ

If I have any hope besides you that I count on,

If I ever thought I had hope other than you

Then I have denied your favors, which cannot be denied.

I would be ungrateful for your blessings that have no equal
