وشال به شوال شهر الفضائل
The fasting month, the month of earthquakes, has ended.
The fasting month has passed, the month of tremors,
And Shawwal, the month of virtues, has carried it away.
And Shawaal followed it, the month of virtues.
ولاحand appeared هلالcrescent الفطرthe breaking of the fast نضواthin and wasted كأنهas though it were
ولاح هلال الفطر نضوا كأنه
سنانspearhead لواهbent it الطعنthrusting فيat رأسtip عاملspear-shaft
سنان لواه الطعن في رأس عامل
And the Eid al-Fitr crescent appeared, thin and wasted, as though it were
The crescent of Eid appeared shining as though
A spearhead bent by thrusting at the tip of a spear-shaft.
It were a tooth pulled from the head of the year.
ودارتand circulated عليناamong us الراحthe wine بينamid أهلةcrescents
ودارت علينا الراح بين أهلة
تضيءshine وأغصانand boughs رطابtender موائلswaying
تضيء وأغصان رطاب موائل
And wine passed round among us, amid crescents
The winds have turned among us, among loved ones,
That shone, and tender, swaying boughs.
Lighting up, while the branches of dew are shelters.
فرحناwe rejoiced وفيand in أجسامناour bodies سحرmagic بابلBabylon
فرحنا وفي أجسامنا سحر بابل
يدبcreeps وفيand in أيمانناour right hands خمرwine بابلBabylon
يدب وفي أيماننا خمر بابل
We rejoiced, while in our bodies Babylon's magic
We rejoiced, while in our bodies Babylonian magic
Crept, and in our right hands was Babylon's wine.
Stirred, and in our faith Babylonian wine.
