Oh, many a distant fire whose blaze seems

Near when we watch it with our eyes.

It fluttered as the streamers of a banner fluttered—

A red one, upon a supple-tipped, swaying shaft.

It rends a pavilion of pitch-black night,

Before our eyes, its curtains drawn down.

The east wind played with it, so it seemed

A hand gesturing with an armlet and a bracelet.

Oh, how lovely it is in the pavilion of our night,

While dawn lays bare the hidden blossoms.
