O you who rob poets of what they have strung from

pearls, arrayed like the radiant stars.

If my verse is bound fast in your captivity,

    between shackles and fetters,

if you will not grant my praise-poems safety

from a sudden assault or a raid that never abates,

then fear God—though I do not think you afraid

to claim as your own the chapters of the revealed Book.

So people are bewildered by you, fearing

that you might efface the traditions of the Prophet sent forth.

O Khalidi, all your disgrace is everlasting,

never ending for the thoughtful observer.

You have always been obscure when virtues are counted,

but your shortcomings are conspicuous, never obscure.
