O Abu al-Husayn, my soul’s hopes have summoned it

to a hand of yours whose favors are renowned.

So end our fast, now that thirst has gripped

our souls because of it; lack of wine leaves them parched.

So grant us a virgin wine like the sun—we shall excuse her

if she shows conceit or pride in her beauty.

And know that wine vessels, if they are large,

reveal, when offered as gifts, their giver’s refinement.
