تَشاغَلَhe distracted himself عنِّيfrom me بطِيبِwith the sweetness of الكَرىslumber
وقَلبيand my heart أسيرٌa captive بهto him مُوثَقُbound
He distracted himself from me with the sweetness of slumber,
He was distracted from me by the fragrance of meadows,
while my heart is a captive, bound to him.
While my heart remains captive, bound to him.
فلاso not ماءُwater عينيَmy eye منfrom حُرقَةٍburning anguish
يَغيضُebbs ولاnor نومُهاits sleep يَطرُقُvisits by night
So, from burning anguish, the tears of my eye
So my eyes shed no tears to relieve their burning,
do not ebb, nor does sleep visit it.
Nor does sleep steal upon them.
كأنَّas though الصَّباحَdawn أسيرٌa captive نأَىhas gone far away
فليسَso it is not يُفَكُّunshackled ولاnor يُطلَقُset free
As though dawn were a captive gone far away,
As though the dawn itself were held captive, far removed,
so it is neither unshackled nor set free.
With no release or freedom granted it.
