ألَمdid ... not? تَرَنيyou see me سَطَوْتُI assailed علىagainst الزّمانِTime
ألَم تَرَني سَطَوْتُ على الزّمانِ
ولمand did not أُعطِI give الخُطوبَcalamities بهin it عِنانيmy reins
ولم أُعطِ الخُطوبَ به عِناني
Have you not seen how I assailed Time
Did you not see me prevail over time,
and did not yield my reins to its calamities?
Not giving troubles any rein?
تَرَكْناwe left الدِّينَreligion يَحفَظُهُsafeguard it أُناسٌpeople
تَرَكْنا الدِّينَ يَحفَظُهُ أُناسٌ
أَضاعُواthey squandered فيهin it صالحةَthe worthy الأمانيhopes
أَضاعُوا فيه صالحةَ الأماني
We left religion in the keeping of people
We left religion for people
who squandered the worthy hopes placed in it.
Who lost therein what is sane.
وعُذناand we sought refuge منfrom مَساجِدِهمtheir mosques بدَيْرٍin a monastery
وعُذنا من مَساجِدِهم بدَيْرٍ
وبالناقوسِand in the bell منfrom صَوْتِthe sound الأذانِthe call to prayer
وبالناقوسِ من صَوْتِ الأذانِ
And we sought refuge from their mosques in a monastery,
We took refuge in monasteries
and in the bell from the sound of the call to prayer.
From mosque's call and domain.
هيit الخَمْرُwine التيthat كَرُمَتْwas noble وطابَتْand was delightful
هي الخَمْرُ التي كَرُمَتْ وطابَتْ
وأنتَand you مِنَfrom الحوادثِmisfortunes فيin أمانِsafety
وأنتَ مِنَ الحوادثِ في أمانِ
It is wine that is noble and delightful,
It is wine that was generous and pure
and you are safe from misfortunes.
While you were safe from harm and pain.
وهذاand this العيشُlife مُخْتَضَرٌcut short وقالواand they said
وهذا العيشُ مُخْتَضَرٌ وقالوا
لناfor us عَيْشٌa life نصيرُwe shall pass إليهto it ثانِيsecond
لنا عَيْشٌ نصيرُ إليه ثانِي
And this life is cut short, yet they say:
And this life is evergreen, they said,
"We have a second life to which we shall pass."
We will have a second time the same.
فخُذْso take منfrom صَفْوِthe unclouded joy of عَيْشِكَyour life ماwhat تَراهyou see it
فخُذْ من صَفْوِ عَيْشِكَ ما تَراه
فماfor ... not الخَبَرُa report المُغّيَّبُunseen كالعِيانِlike firsthand sight
فما الخَبَرُ المُغّيَّبُ كالعِيانِ
So take what you see of your life's unclouded joys,
So take from the essence of your life
for a report of the unseen is not like seeing firsthand.
What you see, not what may remain.
دَعَانيlet me, you two أنفِI dispel بالكاساتِwith the cups هَمَّيmy grief
دَعَاني أنفِ بالكاساتِ هَمَّي
وأستعدِيand I seek aid بهنَّthrough them علىagainst الزَّمانِTime
وأستعدِي بهنَّ على الزَّمانِ
Leave me, you two, to dispel my grief with the cups,
My soul urged me with cups of care
and enlist their aid against Time,
To get ready for time's bane.
وأُعطِand I grant النَّفسَthe soul فيin الدُّنياthis world مُناهاits wishes
وأُعطِ النَّفسَ في الدُّنيا مُناها
فإنيfor indeed I قدalready عرفتُhave learned غداًtomorrow مَكانيmy place
فإني قد عرفتُ غداً مَكاني
and grant my soul its wishes in this world,
And let the soul its fill of life
for I already know where I shall be tomorrow.
For I knew where I will be lain.
