If pleasure presents itself or comes your way,

Then go to pleasure morning and evening.

I was content to gain the dignity

Of despair—and dignity is a gift—

And a companion who kindles for me

The fire of joy with the cup.

    لا أزجُرُ الطَّيرَ الرَّوَح

    I rejoiced, my wishes folded away;

I take no omens from the homeward birds.

Nor do I say of any man,

‘He was stingy with money,’ or, ‘He was generous.’

Nor, through youthful passion, do I see

The path of piety, though it be clear.

    The cup clasps my hand,

While trouble returns or turns aside,

In a garden that has donned

Prayer-beads made from the pearls of dew.

Its doves are familiar with me,

As I drink in the evening and the morning.

I wake them with music, or

They wake me when they sing.

And the sky wears a musk-dyed robe,

    Whose embroidery is the rainbow.

It weeps without sorrow, just as

    It laughs without joy.

    Many a headstrong, unapproachable one

I have let go when he bolted.

And to many a well-meaning reprover

I have said, when he offered counsel:

“Enough! For whoever seeks a better

Life is made better by the cup.”
