نَفسيِmy soul فِداؤُكyour ransom كيفَhow تصبِرُyou endure طائعاًwillingly
عنaway from فِتيَةٍyoung men مثلِlike البُدورِthe full moons صِباحِfair-faced
My soul be your ransom—how can you willingly bear being apart
from young men as fair as full moons?
حَنَّتْyearned نفوسُهمُtheir souls إليكfor you فأعلَنواso they voiced
نَفَساًa sigh يَقُدُّcleaves مَسالكَpathways الأرواحِthe souls
Their souls yearned for you, so they let out
a sigh that cleaves the pathways of souls.
وغدَواand they went in the morning لراحِهمُto their wine وذكرُكَwhile mention of you بينَهمamong them
أذكىmore fragrant وأطيبُand sweeter منthan نسيمِthe breath of الرَّاحِthe wine
And they went to their morning wine, while mention of you among them
was more fragrant and sweeter than the breath of wine.
فإذاand when جرَتit flowed حَبَباًin bubbles علىover أَقْدَاحِهِمْtheir goblets

And when it flowed, bubbling, over their goblets,
they made you sweet basil upon the goblets.
