It is enough for you that my anger terrified Qunaf

before the satire, and so he met his doom from fear.

Were Qunaf's lice a flock, they would graze

in a night of dust that blotted out dawn's bright brow.

O killer of mice, till they are no longer noticed

by householders at dawn or nightfall.

I once had a desire for poetry, worn away

by what reached my ear of your threadbare verse.

Poetry is not mouse poison that you set out

in streets and markets on a tray.

You and Kurdus, your brother, stole my verse; thus

you both have become notorious among all people for theft.
