لي من عُبَيدِ اللهِ خُلٌّ ما أَرى

لي من عُبَيدِ اللهِ خُلٌّ ما أَرى

في جاهِه طَمَعاً ولا في مالِه

في جاهِه طَمَعاً ولا في مالِه

In ʿUbayd Allāh I have a friend; I see no

hope of gain through his influence or his wealth.

كم جاهلٍ بالأمرِ حاولَ نَيلَه

كم جاهلٍ بالأمرِ حاولَ نَيلَه

فرأَى مَنالَ النَّجمِ دونَ مَنالِه

فرأَى مَنالَ النَّجمِ دونَ مَنالِه

Many a man, unaware of the situation, has sought his bounty,

only to find a star easier to reach than his bounty.

قد قلتُ للضَّيفِ المُقِيم ِبدارِه

قد قلتُ للضَّيفِ المُقِيم ِبدارِه

لمّا شكَا لك أُسوةٌ بِعيالِه

لمّا شكَا لك أُسوةٌ بِعيالِه

I said to the guest staying in his house,

when he complained: 'His household shares your plight.'

دارٌ عَدِمت الخيرَ يَقظاناً بها

دارٌ عَدِمت الخيرَ يَقظاناً بها

فَرقَدتُ كي أحظَى بطَيفِ خيالِه

فَرقَدتُ كي أحظَى بطَيفِ خيالِه

A house where I found no good while awake—

so I slept, hoping to glimpse its phantom in a dream.
