رأيتُ الناسَ ذا جُودٍ ومَنْعٍ

رأيتُ الناسَ ذا جُودٍ ومَنْعٍ

فذا يُثَنى عليه وذاك يُهجَى

فذا يُثَنى عليه وذاك يُهجَى

I have seen men generous and withholding:

this one is praised, and that one lampooned.

وفَقْدُ الثلجِ في إبَّانِ قَيْظٍ

وفَقْدُ الثلجِ في إبَّانِ قَيْظٍ

تَذُوبُ له الصخورُ الصُّمُّ وَهْجا

تَذُوبُ له الصخورُ الصُّمُّ وَهْجا

And snow is lacking at the height of summer heat,

whose blaze melts the solid rocks.

فجُدْ بالقوتِ منه تَحُزْ ثَناءً

فجُدْ بالقوتِ منه تَحُزْ ثَناءً

أراكَ بفضلِه أولى وأَحْجَى

أراكَ بفضلِه أولى وأَحْجَى

So give a ration of it and earn praise—

I deem you worthier and more deserving of that honor.

ولا تتعَجَّبَنْ مِنْ بَرْدِ شِعري

ولا تتعَجَّبَنْ مِنْ بَرْدِ شِعري

فإني طالبٌ بالثَّلجِ ثَلْجَا

فإني طالبٌ بالثَّلجِ ثَلْجَا

And do not marvel at the coldness of my verse:

for with snow I seek snow.
