أقبلَ كالذَّوْدِ رَعَتْ شَوارِدُه

أقبلَ كالذَّوْدِ رَعَتْ شَوارِدُه

أغرُّ لا تَكذِبُنا مَواعِدُه

أغرُّ لا تَكذِبُنا مَواعِدُه

It came like a small herd of camels, its strays grazing;

radiant, its promises never fail us.

فظَلَّ يَعتادُ الحياةَ قائدُه

فظَلَّ يَعتادُ الحياةَ قائدُه

وراحَ ظمآنَ الثَّرى يُناشِدُه

وراحَ ظمآنَ الثَّرى يُناشِدُه

So its guide kept returning to life,

and the thirsty soil began imploring it,

حتى إذا ما ارتَجَسَت رواعِدُه

حتى إذا ما ارتَجَسَت رواعِدُه

وَأَذْهَبَتْ بِبُوقِها عُطارِدُه

وَأَذْهَبَتْ بِبُوقِها عُطارِدُه

until, when its thunderclaps resounded

and its ʿUṭārid blew her trumpet far and wide,

عادَتْ بما سرَّ الثَّرى عَوائِدُهُ

عادَتْ بما سرَّ الثَّرى عَوائِدُهُ

وانتثَرتْ في روضِها فرائِدُه

وانتثَرتْ في روضِها فرائِدُه

its customary bounties returned with what gladdened the soil.

And its pearls were scattered through its meadows,

واطَّردَتْ بِصَفْوِها مَوارِدُه

واطَّردَتْ بِصَفْوِها مَوارِدُه

حتى ظَننَّا حَسَناً يُجاوِدُه

حتى ظَننَّا حَسَناً يُجاوِدُه

and its watercourses ran clear and steady,

until we thought Hasan was vying with it in generosity.

هو الحيا الرِّبعيُّ فازَ قاصدُه

هو الحيا الرِّبعيُّ فازَ قاصدُه

مبذولةٌ لوَفدِه فوائدُه

مبذولةٌ لوَفدِه فوائدُه

He is the early spring rain; whoever seeks him prospers.

His bounties are freely offered to his visitors.

مصروفةٌ عن خِلِّه مكائِدُه

مصروفةٌ عن خِلِّه مكائِدُه

شاهدةٌ بفضلِه مَشاهِدُه

شاهدةٌ بفضلِه مَشاهِدُه

His stratagems are turned away from his friend.

His public deeds bear witness to his excellence.

منظومةٌ من شُكرِه قلائِدهُ

منظومةٌ من شُكرِه قلائِدهُ

يَحمَدُهُ وَلِيُّهُ وحاسِدُه

يَحمَدُهُ وَلِيُّهُ وحاسِدُه

His necklaces are strung from words of thanks to him.

His ally and his envier alike praise him.
