فاردُدْ سَوابِقَ دَمْعيَ المَذروفِ
O you who reproach me, if you increase your rebuke,
then call back my tears already shed.

They drew their swords’ keen edges against my heart—
the eyes of slender-waisted gazelles, on the day of parting.

but their eyelids greeted me with deaths.

beneath its shade, and the clan never to be absent.

Then, on the day of separation, I learned its ways, just as
Ibn Nasr learned the way of beneficence.

so I praised the radiance of the crescent aloft.

The sun of bounty soars with a resolve that, if it appeared
before the sun one day, would make it proclaim its eclipse.
