And a black one that unveils its opposite,

As night does when it bids farewell.

I sent it to you, mute,

Whispering to the eyes what was entrusted to it.

Silent when its cloak is buttoned,

Wise—and if one unfastens it, it delights.

    A compiler chose its blossoms,

Ever their gathering-place, evening and morning.

And its garden is the rain of his pens,

Though before him it had been a barren waste.

    Souls find joy in it,

And cares meet their doom in it.

So never count a pleasure outing its equal,

For it holds all that you seek.
