    God's favors—we cannot count their number.

    So we praise God with unceasing praise, forever.

    They held back Time's hand when it reached toward a king

    who has always extended a hand to me in bounty.

    A deliverance through which Glory donned joy,

    after its very entrails had been filled with grief.

    Say to the foe who concealed his enmity

    and came, striving to offer him death as a gift:

    Had the nights favored you, you would have left no refuge

    for noble deeds, nor left them a supporting arm.

    He poisoned the drink to bring death near a lion,

    since he could not reach the resolute lion with his blades.

    So the king partook of it, as the Prophet did, when

    they had hidden treachery and envy for him in roasted meat.

    May the prince in whom hope rests be ransomed by men unable

    to bind what he has loosed, or loose what he has bound.

    رَدَّتْ صُروفَ اللَّيالي عِيشةً رَغَدا

    These are the good fortunes we had hoped for;

    they turned the nights' vicissitudes into a life of ease.

    فَألبَسْ برُغْمِ العِدا أثوابَها الجُدُدا

    Life's garments were renewed for you through them;

    so wear its new garments, in defiance of the foes.
